A quick visit with my father from Canada

I had the chance to enjoy a quick lunch with my dad during his short visit from Canada to South Africa. It was a bittersweet moment as we said our goodbyes at the airport yesterday.

The little ones gave Ouma and Oupa tight hugs, and we stood there, waving and blowing kisses as they walked through security, disappearing into the departure gate. Driving back home, the kids excitedly chatted about airplanes and which one their grandparents were on. Meanwhile, I sat quietly, tears welling up, my heart aching, wondering when I’d get to see my dad again.

Having loved ones living overseas is a constant reminder of the distance that separates us, and it’s a hard pill to swallow. The visits are always filled with joy and love, but the farewells are incredibly tough. I treasure every moment we get to spend together, knowing it will be a while before we can hug each other again. The kids are already asking when Ouma and Oupa will come back, and I find myself wishing for the same thing.

Cherishing these fleeting moments makes me realize how important family is, no matter the distance. Until we meet again, I’ll hold on to these precious memories, keeping them close to my heart.
