For years, I have dealt with scrutiny from fellow Muslims who belittle my “un-Islamic” choices during the festive season. However, I want to make it clear that I do not celebrate Christmas in the conventional sense, nor does it mean that I believe in it.
I don’t attend church events or expect people to wish me a Merry Christmas. However, I do visit my family on their holy day since they are 100% Christian. I buy gifts for my kids and leave them under the tree, not because I am celebrating, but because I want them to not feel left out when other kids get toys and they don’t.
I spend quality time with my family by chatting with my grandfather, aunts, and cousins. We share meals together, and I make sure to bring my own halal food. Just as my family shares in my joy during Eid, they partake in our festive day with as much enthusiasm as their own holidays.
This year, I took my kids to see the beautiful light display at Rosebank. The event was not a celebration of Christmas, but rather a chance for my family to enjoy the festivities and create lasting memories.
I believe that we can respect our family’s religion and share in their joy without having to compromise our own beliefs. To me, the festive season is about spending quality time with loved ones, and that is what I do with my grandfather every year.
If you disagree with my choices and feel the need to insult or belittle me, I have only one thing to say: “Don’t judge me because I sin differently from you.”
